Artist Statement
Emerald's current artistic praxis revolves around contemporary figurative oil painting. Within this framework, she deftly employs the human form as a conduit to navigate the interplay of the political within both private and public domains. Emerald conscientiously fabricates spaces where corporeal experiences oscillate between the realms of pain and pleasure, intertwining the fabric of reality with that of a dreamscape.
Incorporating playful gestures imbued with symbolism, she orchestrates allegorical narratives that lend her oeuvre an autobiographical intimacy. Her work, underpinned by influences from the realms of cynical realism, super flat, and Chinese folklore, undertakes an examination of the post-effects stemming from the One-Child Policy. Moreover, her artistic exploration extends to probing issues surrounding representation, diasporic storytelling, and queer theory.
Through this, Emerald endeavours to elicit a visceral response, compelling viewers to engage in contemplation of the intricate tapestry that is the contemporary world, suspending oneself between loss and reclamation.
